About

The Southeast Texas P-16 Council is a 501.C.3 organization at Lamar University (Beaumont, TX) whose mission is to foster a career-ready, college-going culture in Southeast Texas. We work in Hardin, Jefferson and Orange County to achieve locally the goals of the Texas "Closing the Gaps" plan.

That plan aims to make Texas competitive with other states by 2015. The plan includes raising awareness of the need for post-secondary (after high school) studies to be career ready. While college is the most familiar "post-secondary success, " the catergory includes 4-year and 2 year degrees, college certificates, union apprenticeship, industry schools (such as diesel mechanics), military, and other specialized training.

We aim to change the culture that assumes that a high school diploma or GED is enough to earn a good living and be productive in our society. Studies show that without a post-secondary success, workforce entrants will earn less, have a higher likelihood of being unemployed, and have more health, and life issues.

We welcome you to our site. We hope that you will help us get the word out. Please go to our Newsletter page and sign up for our monthly email to keep you up-to-date.

thanks
