An overwhelming majority of fifth and eighth-grade students have passed the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS) reading and math tests, which means they met the state promotion requirements that are tied to the testing program, the Texas Education Agency reported
The TEA noted that statewide test results released today show that 91 percent of eighth-grade students passed the TAKS reading test and 80 percent passed the TAKS mathematics test.
Forty-six percent of the eighth-grade students earned a Commended Performance designation by correctly answering at least 45 of the 48 test questions on the reading test. A total of 23 percent of the eighth-grade students achieved Commended Performance on the mathematic assessment by correctly answering at least 45 of the 50 test questions.
At fifth grade, 85 percent of the students who took the TAKS in English passed the reading test and 86 percent passed the mathematics test. Thirty-three percent of the students earned Commended Performance in reading and 42 percent earned Commended Performance in math.

African-American fourth-grade students in Texas earned the sixth highest score on the 2009 National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) reading test, results show.
The exam, often called “the nation’s report card,” was taken by 172,533 fourth-grade students in the nation’s public schools, including 5,954 youngsters in Texas. A NAEP reading exam was also given to 155,392 eighth-grade public school students across the country, including 5,733 in Texas.
Overall, the 2009 scores were statistically identical to the 2007 scores nationally and in Texas at both grades. NAEP exams are given every two years.
