More than 1,700 students from the Southeast Texas Class of 2010 have applied for enrollment at Texas public colleges, according to the latest ApplyTexas.org numbers from the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB).
The Southeast Texas P-16 Council tallied the THECB numbers to show that 1,698 had submitted college applications. The actually number is somewhat higher that that because:
- the state supresses the numbers in schools that have five or less applicants, to comply with federal privacy law.
- the state has no accurate way of tracking students who will be attending college out of state, though THECB is working on solving that in future years.
If past trends hold, there will be more applicants from the Southeast Texas region as the deadline for enrollment increases.
The 2010 number can be compared to a separate report by the THECB that shows that when the dust settled from the class of 2008, 1,983 Southeast Texas students actually enrolled in Texas public and independent colleges. That was a little over 51% of the graduating class. (Those figures also did not include students from this area attending out of state colleges and does not include students graduating from private high schools.)
Of those 1,938 students from 2008, 1,322 were enrolled in one of the four higher education institutions in Southeast Texas. (Lamar University: 709, LIT: 286, Lamar State College Port Arthur: 161 Lamar State College Orange: 166)
The most popular out-of-the-area university shown on the report was A&M with 86 enrollees. It’s feeder 2-year college,.Blinn, had 26 enrollees shown.
ApplyTexas.org is the State of Texas web site for applying to any public college or university in the state. A student can apply for several colleges or university with one application process.
Note: on the 2008 figures: some data is surpressed when a high schools has less than 5 students enrolled in a particular college. That means that the actual number of enrollments from this area may be slightly greater than the numbers given.)
The 2008 figures are shown on this page
